Doha – Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani has called on all sides to seize the “momentum” created by US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire proposal to end Israel’s war on Gaza, stressing that the priority must be protecting civilians.

In an interview with Al Jazeera on Wednesday, Sheikh Mohammed said the plan – already endorsed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – was shared with Hamas’s negotiating team and discussed at length.

“Everyone agreed on stopping the war, preventing displacement and the full withdrawal of the Israeli army. These are the three pivotal matters,” he said. “The main focus is how to protect the people in Gaza.”

The Trump-backed 20-point plan has received support from Arab and Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Turkiye, and Indonesia. It calls for an immediate end to attacks, full aid access, the release of Israeli captives in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and Hamas’s demilitarisation. A temporary international force would oversee security while a Palestinian technocratic committee governs Gaza.

Sheikh Mohammed acknowledged “practical and implementation challenges,” particularly concerning Israel’s withdrawal timetable. Hamas has yet to deliver a formal response, though Trump has warned the group has only days to accept or face “hell.”

Critics say the plan provides no real guarantees for Palestinians and risks cementing Israeli control.
